Rods Memorial Service: Beach Party 4 Rod is being held at Praia Grande near Salgados Albufeira on Sunday 23rd May at 12 til we drop! Rod's funeral service will take place on Wednesday 5th May 2010 at 12 noon St Werburgh's Church St Werburgh's Square Grand Precinct Birkenhead Merseyside CH41 2XZ After the service we will be going to Landican Crematorium, Arrowe Park Road, Wirral and then on Trudi's house for a toast to Rod. (If you are considering attending, please drop me an email rtpsmyth@hotmail.com as we would like to have an idea of how many we will be catering for, thank you)
NOW IS THE TIME………….
Every day that passes, reduces Rods options and chances of finally getting the kidney he desperately needs and has waited for, for ten years. Portugal medical care has taken him off the waiting list telling us his heart condition is complicating the straight forwardness of a transplant, and now the UK have suggested that a double (Pancreas/Kidney) transplant is off the cards for the same reason. They, however, are encouraging him to go on the waiting list in the UK for the more routine operation of just the kidney.
The other option and possibly the more favored of the two, is a kidney ‘pool/paired exchange scheme’ whereby I could donate my kidney to a third party and either they or a fourth party would be able to donate their kidney to Rod. We have yet to establish whether or not Portugal will be forward thinking enough to fund the donors operation in the UK, as this expense is the responsibility of the recipient. If they do...fantastic, although we still need your help.
Either way, we would now like to call upon your very kind offers of help over the last few years and ask if you can help raise some funds to assist in the expenses that he will incur when either of these last two options take place. Any money not used will be donated to charities both in Portugal and UK to help save someone else in the same situation.
So to launch the appeal I have now run the Lisbon half marathon. This happened on the 22nd March and I only started training 4 weeks prior to this date. It was 21 kms which is 13 miles. I am by no means a runner in any sense of the word and have actually tried to avoid it for my 40 years of existence, perhaps it’s a mid-life crisis, or perhaps it is the inspiration of Shirley Emilio who ran the entire length of the Algarve last year in just 6 days. (A full marathon a day she tells me!) Whatever it is, I know it’s going to be difficult - but it’s real. I am finally doing something practical for all to see, to show people we need the help where possible for my truly amazing husband and devoted father to Phoebe, who rarely complains about the difficulties he suffers every day of his life.
This is by no means the only fund raising event, we have had some very successful events including, Ride 4 Rod, Jump 4 Rod, Fun 4 Rod, Summer Ball 4 Rod, Play 4 Rod, Golf 4 Rod and Car Boot Sale 4 Rod. Please click on the buttons on the left of this page to find out how they went. We have more events planned so watch this space! . If anybody out there would like to join me, please let me know, the more the merrier! In addition, if anyone can suggest ideas to improve exposure, I would be very grateful for any input. I am starting this idea with a blank piece of paper it is only evolving with the help of friends.
I would like to enhance this webpage by adding comments from all of you who know Rod, please send anything you would like the world to know about him! Shaun, you can send more than one, but keep it clean!
This of course is NOT a registered charity; it is a private fund raising appeal. We have set up a separate bank account and a PayPal option for any donations. All expenses will be accounted for.
I will be continuously updating this site, so please check it regularly to keep abreast of the events leading up to the wonderful day (and beyond) when Rod might actually feel well again and Phoebe can have a Daddy who has the energy to play with her.
